Depending on the region where grown, Santos mahogany exhibits a range of color between light orange/brown with yellowish overtones to a dark reddish/purplish brown. Most of the lumber falls into the medium to dark orange/brown mahogany tone. There will be a slight muting of the color over time upon exposure to light. Despite the resemblance Santos Mahogany is not the same species as the African or Honduran versions which are considered “real Mahogany” and illegal

How hard Is Santos Mahogany?
The measurement used to measure ‘hardness’, JANKA is most often measured to red oak and most people know that higher means harder. Many times, the number will be compared to domestic Red Oak which carries a 1220 Janka rating.

Durability and Stability
At 60 lbs. per cubic foot the density of Santos Mahogany and some of the tree will be heavier than water. A board foot weighs just under 5 lbs. but despite the density the wood remains exceptionally stable when exposed to humidity changes. This floor requires a full 6% change in moisture content to move 1%, which is high on the scale to comparable exotic imports which do not handle moisture as well as they do fire.

FINISH & INSTALL
Santos Mahogany’s hardness makes it difficult to install without professional grade tools. Cutting it requires carbon-tipped saw blades. To use screws or nails, you will need to pre-drill holes, which requires a drill with a carbide bit. Gluing the wood is possible, but not easy because of the natural oils which inhibit the glue from setting properly. Furthermore, just as it resists water penetration, the species also resists stains and preservatives.
