Unfinished Brazilian Walnut Flooring

Unfinished Brazilian Walnut (Ipe)
Also called Brazilian walnut, Ipe is a gorgeous wood with a rich, dark brown color. Ipe is highly sought after and considered to be one of the best decking options. From the tabebuia tree, which grows throughout a wide region covering Mexico south to Argentina, Ipe is naturally resistant to rot, insects, and weather. It is also one of the hardest woods available, with a Janka Hardness Rating of 3,680 lbs.

Colors ranges from olive brown to blackish with some pieces having a reddish tint. Today, Brazilian walnut is a popular choice for indoor flooring where, until 10 years ago, it was used in less forgiving settings, such as the boardwalk in Atlantic City. The lumber has been, and continues to be, a popular choice for decking, foot bridges, railroad crossties, tool handles, boardwalks, boat docks, and piers.

Durability and Stability
Hard as steel! Brazilian walnut has a score of over 3600 on the Janka hardness test, making it one of the hardest woods in the world. Ipe’ sinks when you throw into water, not slowly but to the bottom like steel. Ipe’ carries a fire-resistant rating. Yes, you have read it right – there is such a thing as a fire-resistant wood. The fibers in this hardwood are so densely packed that is has the same fire rating as concrete and steel. And finally, the species is bug resistant as well as hypoallergenic.

No Allergies or Bugs
Brazilian walnut contains copious amounts of natural oil. Having oily flooring might not sound like that good of an idea, but those oils actually make the wood resistant to all kinds of bugs love to munch on hardwoods. Ipe’ also can be great for people suffering from allergies – the oils instantly kill off mites and spores.
